| THE TROUBLE WITH DOCTORS |
Doctors. Nothing could be further from the truth. Although I have received lots of letters about bad treatment from the medical profession, I have also got a lot more about the quality of treatment. My complaint is the system and the terminology. To describe COPD as a Terminal Disease immediately depresses a patient. I have had it for well over 30 years (I'm now over 76 ) and when I die I doubt very much that it will be through COPD. Hopefully being shot by a jealous husband, but who knows. The system is at fault. People who practice medicine look upon themselves as healers, but thanks to the government, insurance industry and the drug companies they are lucky to spend 25% of their time with patients. Between red tape and the bureaucracy of the Government and the Insurance Industry about 50% of their time is used filling in forms and making out reports - paper shuffling. Then there are the Drug Companies who flood every office with salespeople, all peddling their new panaceas. It is not surprising that they are harried and sometimes bad tempered. Add to this that one disease (the third biggest killer in the country) is designated as "Terminal" and you can understand why COPD patients get such short shift. A Doctor has hundreds of patients to cure and one part of these are deemed "incurable". Look at it this way - a patient appears in your office, wheezing and hardly able to walk. It is hardly surprising that they feel that making the patient comfortable and sending them home with a handful of drugs is the best they can do. After all, there is no cure, so why waste your time? But there are thousands of people that have fought COPD and do quite well so why not read up on them? With the will and a little help with how to start, YOU CAN JOIN THE SURVIVORS. TIME. Every day my mailbox is inundated with information about new drugs, new equipment and new treatments for COPD. But I also have one suppliers of information that covers all diseases. And that covers 3 to 5 pages of single spaced paper of listings. There are literally hundreds and hundreds of advances and the average Doctor doesn't have time to absorb this and all the other things that crosses his desk so he isn't aware of all the advances that are going on. If he is like the rest of us, he concentrates on the problems he deals with every day and ignores the rest. SO DON"T BLAME THE DOCTOR, BLAME THE SYSTEM |
